A extração de corrupto, Callichirus major (Say) (Crustacea, Thalassinidea), para uso como isca em praias do litoral do Paraná: as populações exploradas Zoologia
Souza,José R. B.; Borzone,Carlos A..
A recreational fishery that use ghost-shrimp as bait was evaluated along 11 km of a sandy beach of Paraná State. The beach was divided in five sectors and samples were obtained along a transect extended on the middle of each sector, after and before months of major extractive activity. The highest densities were found in beaches with well select very fine sands and gentle slope. The density decreased only at the sector that presented greater extractive activity. In this sector, the smallest mean modal size was detected too. The total standing stock of the whole area was 2,486,250 individuals before summer's months, with a mean density of de 4.48 ind.m-2. Annual fishing effort represented nearly 10 % of total standing stock.

Changes in the intertidal community structure after a mass mortality event in sandy beaches of Argentina Naturalis
Dadon, J.R..
After a massive mortality of the dominant species (the clam Mesodesma mactroides) occurred in 1995, changes in the intertidal community in sandy beaches of Argentina were monitored. Eight sampling stations were established in a 40 km open stretch and samples were taken every October each year up to 2001. Biomass, density, size frequency distribution and mean growth rates for the most abundant species were analyzed. During the mortality event, only the benthic stages of M. mactroides were affected, their total mean biomass diminishing from 1,399 g to 2 g per running meter beach. Post-mortality recruitment was normal and the growth rates for the youngest cohorts were similar to those previously reported. After a two years’ lag, the wedge clam Donax...

Composition and assemblage structure of demersal fish from São Cristóvão beach, Areia Branca, RN Biota Neotropica
Dantas,Natália Carla Fernandes de Medeiros; Feitosa,Caroline Vieira; Araújo,Maria Elisabeth de.
Fish assemblages are an important element of sandy beaches, as they are fundamental for these ecosystems' balance of energy. Descriptions of the structure of fish assemblages in the sandy beaches of northeastern Brazil are scarce; this is especially true for the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which northern coast is poorly studied. This study aimed to identify the fish fauna of São Cristóvão Beach and to determine their assemblage structure. Three trawlings, considered as replicates, were undertaken monthly, in the same day, during 10 minutes each time, parallel to the coastal line, and in the direction of current, from February 2010 to January 2011. To describe the general pattern of the fish assemblage, the abundance, frequency and trophic categories of...

How does eutrophication impact bundles of ecosystem services in multiple coastal habitats using state-and-transition models ArchiMer
Kermagoret, Charlene; Claudet, Joachim; Derolez, Valerie; Nugues, Maggy M.; Ouisse, Vincent; Quillien, Nolwenn; Baulaz, Yoann; Le Mao, Patrick; Scemama, Pierre; Vaschalde, Diane; Bailly, Denis; Mongruel, Remi.
One of the current major scientific challenges to sustain social-ecological systems is to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services. Here, we analyse the bundles of ecosystem services supplied by three coastal ecosystems (coastal lagoons, coral reefs and sandy beaches) along a gradient of eutrophication. Based on a state-and-transition model, we analyses the dynamic responses of ecological communities to environmental change and management actions. Although few exceptions are highlighted, increasing eutrophication in the three ecosystem types leads to a degradation of the ecosystem service bundles, particularly for nutrient and pathogen...

Locomotor activity of Phalerisida maculata Kulzer (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) on Chilean sandy beaches RChHN
JARAMILLO,EDUARDO; AVELLANAL,MARIA H; GONZALEZ,MARCIA; KENNEDY,FERGUS.
The locomotor activity of the beetle Phalerisida maculata Kulzer (Coleoptera Tenebrionidae) was studied on the surface of the substrate in two sandy beaches of the Chilean coast: one in north central (ca. 29ºS) and the other in south central Chile (ca.39ºS). During the summer period of 1991 the circadian locomotor activity was studied in the southern beach, while during that of 1997 in both beaches. To analyze the activity, pitfall traps were used which were ordered along two transects extended between the upper beach and the resurgence zone. The traps were checked (i.e. collection of captured insects) every two hours for a total period of 26 hours. The results showed that the adults of P. maculata were mostly active during the night hours, whereas the...

Macroinfauna of Six Beaches near Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazil BABT
Barros,Francisco; Borzone,Carlos Alberto; Rosso,Sergio.
Benthic macroinfauna of six beaches near to Guaratuba Bay, Paraná, Brazil were studied in summer and winter of 1994. Sampling stations were distributed along a transect, from upper of the drift line to depths of nearly 3 m behind the first break of the surf zone. Biological and sedimentological samples, slope, wave height and period were recorded. Subtidal samples were collected by scuba diving. The beaches varied from extremely inclined, composed of coarse sediments, to low inclined, composed of fine and very fine sands. The polychaete Scolelepis squamata, was the numerically dominant species in those beaches composed by fine to very fine sand in the subaereal profile. The echinoderm Mellita quinquiesperforata occurred in the last stations of the surf...

Modification paysagères et mecanisation des côtes sableuses de la région d'alicante (S-E de l'Espagne) OceanDocs
El Gtari, M.; Bouriga, N.; Medini-Bouaziz, L.; Hamaied, S.; Charfi-Cheikhrouha, F..

Population structure of Callichirus major (Say 1818) (Crustacea: Callianassidae) and conservation considerations at Southeast coast of São Paulo, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moschetto,Fernanda Augusto; Borges,Roberto Pereira; Duarte,Luis Felipe de Almeida.
Abstract Globally, there is limited knowledge about management and conservation of Callianassidae family. Their catches seem to be recently increasing in several parts of the world and evidences raise concern on the need of specialized literature focused on populations monitoring. At Southeast of Brazil, the species Callichirus major (Say 1818), known as the ghost shrimp, is frequently captured for use as bait in sport fishing and, according to previous studies, the overexploitation could threaten the population. The aim of this study was evaluated over a year this harmful human pressure on the species C. major in two beaches contiguous but susceptible to different anthropogenic impacts due to the existence of legislation on one beach that prohibits the...

Sandy beach macroinfauna from the coast of Ancud, Isla de Chiloé, southern Chile RChHN
JARAMILLO,EDUARDO; DUARTE,CRISTIAN; CONTRERAS,HERALDO.
Six sandy beaches were sampled on the coast of Ancud, Isla de Chiloé, southern Chile (ca. 42º S) with the following purposes: 1) to study community structure and across shore zonation of the intertidal macroinfauna in relation to different beach types, and 2) to analyze how similar or different is the taxonomic composition and community structure of the macroinfaunal assemblages, compared to those inhabiting sandy beaches located further north of Canal de Chacao, the limit between Isla de Chiloé and the mainland coast. Sediment samples (0.1 m², 30 cm deep) were collected (April-May 1998) with plastic cylinders at fifteen equally spaced levels along three replicated transects (separated by 1 m) extending from above the drift line to the swash zone. The...

Temporal variability of benthic macrofauna on Cassino beach, southernmost Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Neves,Luciano P. das; Silva,Pedro de S. R. da; Bemvenuti,Carlos E..
The temporal variability of benthic macrofauna on Cassino beach, southernmost Brazil, was studied for a period of one year (June 2004 to May 2005) based on monthly sampling. Three sites were selected distant 50m from each other. At each site, 3 transects were established, 2m equidistant from one another. Each transect extended from the base of the primary dunes to the inner surf zone at approximately 1m in depth, with 7 or 8 sampling levels. Within transects, the distance between the levels was 20m until the upper swash zone, from which distance was 10m until the 1-meter isobath. The temporal variation in the abundance of benthic macrofauna observed in the present study can be attributed to (1) the positive effects of the recruitment peaks and migration of...

The birds at Ilha Comprida beach (São Paulo State, Brazil): a multivariate approach Biota Neotropica
Barbieri,Edison; Paes,Eduardo Tavares.
Birds were censused weekly from January 1999 to January 2001 along Ilha Comprida beach, a barrier island off São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. To evaluate the similarity in the bird's species composition among the weekly surveys, species counts data were arranged on a data matrix with 144 weekly surveys, analyzed following a multivariate analysis protocol. We counted a total of 205,399 individuals and 52 species. Migratory birds were an important component of the avifauna (maximum N = 21,294 individuals and 14 species). The largest numbers of birds were observed during summer, when Nearctic migrants arrive. All 14 of the most common species were migrants, including Calidris alba, Sterna maxima, Charadrius semipalmatus, Sterna hirundo, Thalasseus maximus,...

The effect of physical and chemical parameters on the macroinfaunal community structure of San Vicente bay, Chile RChHN
SIEMENS,ROCÍO A.; MUDGE,STEPHEN M.; CANCINO,JUAN M..
San Vicente bay is a heavily industrialised bay located in central Chile, which has a sand beach extending from an area of recreational use in the south to an area of industrial use and discharge in the north. A survey of the macrofauna in the intertidal zone revealed a non-homogeneous distribution; a maximum of five invertebrate species were found with all five only occurring in one of six transects down the beach. The density ranged from 0 to 188 individuals m-2, with the highest density at the recreational end. The most common species, Emerita analoga (Stimpson), was chosen to study the macrofaunal response to beach morphodynamics, physicochemical parameters and metal concentrations. The E. analoga distribution was not significantly correlated with the...
